MSc in Telematics – Communication Networks and Networked Services
- Specialization in Services and Systems Engineering
This specialization has focus on architecture and software development of networked services and multimedia systems. A service is here some application functionality to be used by persons or programs within a well-defined application context. Example services are in house control and surveillance systems, Interactive TV, Video Conferencing and Distant Learning, Telemedicine (remote diagnosis, 3D- based surgery), Tele robotics and E-commerce.
To be able to construct new applications and services efficiently, architectures and platforms are needed that can be used to design, construct, deploy, execute, manage and operate new services. This specialization gives expertise and knowledge on the nature of services and architectural solutions of such services from traditional platforms for distributed systems, intelligent networks, web services, semantic web, network and service management, to autonomic communication which is believed to be the future communication paradigm.
The various terminals that we are using today are converging in the sense as the PC and Mobile phone can be used as TV, and the TV can be used as a PC. Behind the terminal and the services, however, a development is ongoing with respect to architectures and principles that is invisible for the user, but which is crucial to understand and use for the service engineer. How can an E-commerce application be constructed that combines video, picture, text and graphics and that can be used from a TV set, mobile phone and PC? How to make service software for a Java enabled mobile phone?
Communication systems and services are characterized by a large number of interacting tasks being performed in parallel on nodes that may be distributed all over the world. How to get 1000 computers to work together well? A systems engineer must know how to deal with such complex systems with high demands on up-time, performance and quality. How to develop the communication software of a large satellite earth station demanding the joint effort of hundreds of software developers?
